The championship bouts in the 2016 Daily News Golden Gloves tournament kicked off Wednesday at Empire City Casino with seven bouts.
Leading off the night of champions were the women.
Brittney Delgado (Impact Boxing MMA) defeated Neena Ajwani (Mendez BC) in the 106-pound division to earned her second Golden Gloves title. “I had everything planned out,” says the 2011 winner, “I knew they wanted to wrestle, but I kept it tight. I’m happy!” Delgado won unanimously.
In the 112-pound class, Ivette Delgado (Atlas Cops N Kids) defeated Gabriella Gulfin (Class One MMA) pretty handily, landing big shots throughout the bout en route to an unanimous win.
“I had a lot of high expectations for the night,” says the Yonkers native, “a lot of people came out tonight to see me fight and I wanted to do well.” This was Delgado’s third title win in the Gloves.
Winning her first pair of Golden Gloves was Nyisha Goodluck (Atlas Cops N Kids). Goodluck defeated Trudy Li (Green Fitness) is a very close 125-pound class match. “First year, first time!” says Goodluck. “Feeling great and blessed.”
In the bout of the night, with both boxers kneeling in prayer, Chayanne Rivera (Mendez BC) was moved to tears, as his hands were raised in victory. “I’m very emotional,” says the 3-time Gloves winner, “because he’s my little brother. Instead of being happy, I was crushed, because I know how hard he trained. We trained together.”
It was a close bout throughout but in the third round of this men’s 114-pound open championship, bout guys met in the center of the ring and let it all go. Rivera would win 3-0.
Just as emotional was his stablemate and friend, Andy Dominguez. “I’m glad, I’m proud,” says the 17-year old, “When I first got in the gym, he was the one to push me. He’s my idol.”
Taking home the gold for another year for the females, respectively were Nisa Rodriguez (NYAC) and Krystal Dixon (Champs BC). Now a 7-time champion, Rodriguez beat Macarena Soto (Atlas Cops N Kids) easily with a first round TKO (1:46) in the 152-pound class. In the 176-pound class, Dixon, now a 4-time champion defeated a tough opponent in Daniela Huerfano (Eastern Queens BC).
The final pair of golden gloves awarded for the night went to Patrick Aristhene (Freeport PAL), who defeated Tyriece Stokes unanimously in their 178-pound bout.
