Bridgeport, CT—Fairfield (11-9, 5-5 MAAC) led every step of the way, and in a statement victory convincingly defeated MAAC conference leader Iona, 98-94, (10-9, 7-3 MAAC) at Webster Bank Arena this afternoon Sunday.
Senior forward and leading scorer Marcus Gilbert fueled the Stags triumph with 32 points on the strength of seven three-pointers to lead Fairfield. It was Gilbert’s third 30-plus point performance of the season. Gilbert pulled down 10 rebounds for a double. Sophomore guard Tyler Nelson had 22 points for Fairfield. Scott King, Jr. chipped in with 11 points for the Stags off the bench, including nine in the first half.
It was Fairfield’s first win over Iona since 2013. The Stags had lost five straight in the series to the Gaels.
For Head coach Sydney Johnson and the Stags, it was their 11th win of the year, four more than the Stags recorded all of last season.
Gilbert was held scoreless in six minutes in Iona’s 101-77 win over Fairfield on December 1 before he was sidelined with an ankle injury.
Fairfield led by as many as 17, and enjoyed a 50-42 halftime advantage despite 22-points for Jordan Washington in the opening stanza. Washington finished with 33 points to lead all scorers. AJ English scored 16 points for Iona after he was held scoreless in the first half.
