Fairfield, CT—The Stags rookies continue to excel! Freshmen guard Jerry Johnson, Jr. scored a career-high 20 points and fellow-rookie backcourt mate Curtis Cobb chipped in with 16 points as Fairfield (7-6) won its seventh game of the season to defeat Dartmouth (4-8), 97-85, on Monday night (January 4) at Alumni Hall on the Fairfield University campus. The Stags’ seventh win of the season equaled last year’s victory total.
Johnson, Jr. nailed five straight three-point field goals before missing on his sixth. Senior Marcus Gilbert led Fairfield with 21 points. Sophomore Tyler Nelson scored 20 in a balanced scoring attack. Sophomore Jerome Segura had nine assists for Fairfield, matching his career best.
Sydney Johnson’s Fairfield squad is 6-0 this season when scoring 80 or more points. The Stags are 5-1 at home, including a 2-0 record on George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall.
Fairfield hit 12 three-point field goals. Earlier in the year the Stags twice were successful on 17 three-point attempts, the best in school history.
The Stags had a 41-38 halftime lead, and were up by as many as 10 points in the first half. Johnson, Jr. hit four of the Stags eight three-point field goals in the first half.
It was the first meeting between the two schools in 30 years; they last met in 1985. Fairfield has a 3-0 series lead against Dartmouth. Dartmouth’s Connor Boehm led all scorers with 24 points, matching his career best.
Fairfield travels to Siena for a MAAC matchup on Thursday, January 7, at the Times Union Center. Tip-off is at 5:00 pm, and the “Voice of the Stags” Bob Heussler will call the action with Fairfield great Joe DeSantis providing expert commentary on WVOF (88.5 FM).
